The climate won't be the hottest compared to the peak summer season, but we're guessing that it will still be warmer than where you currently are now. If you hate the New Year's crowds too, then you're going to love it in Cyprus; the end of the year is a very traditional and humble season, so cultural events and festivals are kept to a minimum.
